UNFCCC COP 18 : Indonesia’s REDD+, An Update: Future Carbon Market

Dr. Yetti Rusli, M.Sc
Advisor to the Minister for
Environment & Climate Change,
Ministry of Forestry, Indonesia
Session: REDD+ and Carbon Market
10.00 – 12.00 in Al Ghariyah 1, 8th Floor

One method of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is through reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation. Almost half of Indonesia’s total land area is forest cover. The country is host to the third largest tropical rainforest in the world which is home to a large and diverse biodiversity. Not only are the forests of the archipelago vital for both the Indonesian people and economy but they also form part of the lungs of the world.

REDD+, which includes such activities as sustainable forest management and enhancement of forest carbon stock, is a policy that may be very suited to the Indonesian environmental and societal landscape. REDD+ coupled with the carbon market provides financial and market based incentives for projects. It also allows for partnerships and cooperation to be developed among the relevant stakeholders both within Indonesia.

This session, hosted by the Ministry of Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia, will explore the progress of climate change efforts in the forestry sector, which include national and sub national policy and programs, methodology, technology and institutional set up for REDD+ in Indonesia.Additionally, the session will provide information on various on-going projects and projects that are being developed under the umbrella of the REDD+ Indonesia Project, as well as taking the opportunity to show the high investment potential of these projects and in REDD+ and the carbon market, particularly in Indonesia.
